*- Set your course forward towards the pale city fair.*
***Kione****, or in High Ekrilldorian "****Karn Kionai****" (K-arn Ki-oh-nae) is the third largest city in the Ekrilldorian Empire. Home to its fleets, oldest surviving structures, and the home city of the sitting High Chancellor. Its standard is simple, An Oronite cross, and black sun covering the dark blue of the Oronian sea. With the city's ancient crest resting at the center with Gryphon feathers, the north star, and trident.*
# Founding.
Established in 4974 A.E. (After Exodus) by Prince Belgarin Bravesoul. Who ventured into the northern foothills of the Drarrowstone peninsula and founded Kione. As his other brothers did after the Renunciation. Where Maekar the Conqueror forced his three brothers to renounce the throne. Where Tharnan went on to found Khar Darin, Durek - Bharakorum, and Maekar, remaining on the Imperial seat of Kharnathrangul. Belgarin's choice of charge was a natural harbor surrounded by foothills, a singular plateau, bordered by the Fraesil Mountains. But as his city rose into prosperity, He designed a ruling council based on the Imperial Senate. For he swore that unlike him and his siblings. None should ever fight over something as petty as a throne; let it be passed to someone who's earned it. Thereafter, he adopted the title "Prineclos," a temporary position with a maximum of two forty-year-long terms. Elections for the position of Prineclos are reserved for the ruling council of 150 representatives. Composed of Landowners, Guild masters, and Clan Patriarchs/Matriarchs. It is the longest continuation of "Democracy" In Ekrilldor, uninterrupted for almost ten millennia.
# Growing Prestige
Kione, or known by sailors as the "Pale city," is courtesy of its main lighthouse burning a bright white flame. Would become the nexus for all trade heading south through the Solic straights. With its position and status as one of Azaeri's crown jewels. Tens of thousands would migrate to the city over the course of Millennia. Looking for honest work, a place to find fame, or to simply escape the reach of corsairs. Leading to it becoming the most diverse city in the Empire. Cultures from around the Aenevitian continent where and still are hosted within its walls. However don't be mistaken, the dwarven ruling caste still makes the majority of the decisions for the inhabitants of The Pale City. Whether they like it or not.
# The Catastrophe
In 13,787 A.E., when the world itself was thrown into turmoil upon the sinking of Kharnathrangul. Alongside the majority of the Azaerian homeland. The city was rocked by minor quakes and extreme flooding. Its positioning as the furthest city away from the epicenter spared it from the worst effects of the catastrophe. With several of its Ancient structures surviving into the modern day. Unlike her sister cities, Bharakorum and Khar Darin.
# Modern Day
In the current year 1514 A.C. (After Catastrophe), during the 74th year of King-Emperor Morgon's reign. It remains as a shining beacon of Ekrilldor's ancient prestige, might, and the home of their most note worthy philosophers.
With Kione even being granted further land rights, self-autonomy, and authority to govern itself. Courtesy of its contributions to the Reconquest against Gashnaak during the Restoration wars 1422 A.C. - 1453 A.C. .
# Noteworthy Locations:
1. *Belgarins Akropolis - The Oldest structure in the city. Home to its senate, council chambers, and philosophy halls. It rests on Egrossil's Plateau and overlooks the surrounding foothills.*
2. *The Pearl Harbor of Kione - Named after the pearl trade. This harbor is constructed in the traditional Azaerian circular design. Only found in former territories, and Ekrilldorian major holds.*
3. *Thraen's Locks - A system of canals and locks that leads up into the Fraesil mountains. Operated by their intricate waterworks network, which spans the entire metropolitan area. It is one of the greatest Engineering marvels of the Empire, and is often visited by foreign dignitaries and tradesmen. Seeking to gather knowledge of how it was made. As the locks serve another purpose, to assist in storing "The Brazen Fleet" within the bowels of the mountain. Safe from the elements and possible raids, espionage, and sabotage.*
4. *Kugturuhms Mausoleum - King-Emperor Kugturuhm the Builder, Son of Azalea the restorer. Did not wish to be buried in the Basilica he raised for his mother upon Mt Daeron in the capital. Instead, he chose a boulder mound and raised up a new basilica in its stead. In death, this Basilica would become the final resting place for the dwarf who raised the longest chain of walls in the world. The aptly named "Great Walls of Kugturuhm", his resting spot, remains a pilgrimage site for Oronites.*
5. *Hippodrome of Kazrik the Butcher - Known as Kazrik the Conqueror in life, he was Kugutruhms' greatest advisor and general during his campaigns to reclaim lost lands. Taken by their foes during the century of turmoil that followed the catastrophe. Where Azalea consolidated the crownlands, and Kugturuhm ordered the reclamation of the outer provinces. It was Kazrik who led the majority of the campaigns. From Pithaki in the north, across the Ekrill mountains, down the Krakoans, and into the heart of Oskavia. Where it is said he felled their Hetmanate in less than 7 days. (Considered a myth in most scholarly circles)*
6. *Claymans way - The oldest market in the city, home to tanneries, leatherworkers, etc. . It is also where the majority of the spices hauled into the city are sold due to its proximity to the harbor. Its name comes from its close proximity to the clay works, where sea clay is harvested for the city's Artisans.*
7. *Thrunûn's Shipworks - Named after the 137th Prineclos elected to rule over the city. It is where merchant vessels may find swift repair, commission, or decommission any vessel. Although the current quartermaster for the works is rather strict on who he offers service to.*
8. *Ole Kione - Old Kione, is where the majority of the dwarves in the city reside. Although the cityscape is now home to mostly humans. The highlords, councilmen, and guildsmen remain dwarves. Segregated from the rest of their city by walls said to have been built three hundred years after its first hall was raised.*
9. *Colloseum of Dûrkarin - Named after the fabled saint and orc-slayer Dûrkarin. Where many sell swords, beast hunters, and gladiators seek glory in the sight of the masses.*
10. *The Elven Quarter - Over the millenia the city has always hosted a small minority of elves. But with King-Emperor Morgon's restoration and his wife being Elarien of the Lunar Elves. Immigration to Ekrilldor has increased for her kin. However, they encountered extreme bigotry from the general public due to general mistrust. Causing them to make their own community along the southern bend.*
11. *The Maritime Basilica - Captains, fishmongers, marines, and merchants alike pray within its halls. To seek a blessing from Oron before they set out into the open sea or after returning from a contract. It is also where thousands of them have been buried or burned after their deaths. Its bells ring out over the rooftops every day, for the sea is an unforgiving foe for Kione's finest sons.*
12. *Victory Triumph - A triumph dedicated to the thousands of Kioneans who have fought on behalf of the Empire over the past nine thousand years. It is due to their efforts and actions. That Kione remains the only Azaerian city in the Crownlands to have never fallen under foreign rule or occupation.*
13. *Watchful Colossi of Belgarin II - Elected after the end of his fathers eighty year long term. Belgarin commissioned the Sky-forge in Nopahdtim to create five guardian golems. Carved in the imagery of Hoplites. Their glowing blue eyes watch the harbor, defending it from any naval assault launched against it. If the Brazen fleet were to fail in already dispelling the threat.*
14. *The Prineclos's palace - The official residence for the sitting Prineclos.*
15. *The Opal Gate - Kione's main gate, named after the opal traders who persistently pass through it from nearby mining settlements.*
16. *Kharun Orethane's Gate - The gateway to the carved out undercity of Kione. Where Khar darin's, for example, was simply modeled and stabilized in a former caldera. Kione carved into the mountain itself using combustion runes and magics. This gate leads to the shipyards, drydocks, granaries, and storehouses, which provide for the city in times of crisis. Water to the cavern is moved along aqueducts from the peaks above, through carved out veins into the under-harbor, and then regulated by guildsmen assigned to maintain its water flow and level.*
