Hey Guys,
I'm currently working on this underground map and it got me thinking about something.
How often do you actually use sewers when running adventures in a city?
Sewer dungeons are everywhere in fantasy RPGs, but historically I'm not sure how common a large, walkable underground sewer netwwork would actually have been in a medieval-style city.
Ancient Rome obviously had some impressive drainage/sewer infrastructure, but even the Cloaca Maxima started primarily as a drainage system rather than the kind of gigantic underground dungeon we tend to see in fantasy .
So I'm curious:
When you play or design a medieval/fantasy city, do you actually expect there to be a sewer system underneath it?
And if not sewers, what would you use instead for underground city adventures — old drainage tunnels, aqueducts, forgotten foundations, smugglers' tunnels, catacombs, etc.?
I'd love to hear how you guys handle this?
