Description

**The Serpent Lands - Map 4**

The Serpent Lands are immediately south of the Autumn Lands. There’s no set scale for these maps, and the items on the maps are not to scale with each other so we can see points of interest like towers, cities, and caves. If you really need a scale for this and don’t want to pick one yourself, go with six miles to the hex.

As hinted at in the Autumn Lands, this region was once the heart of a lizard-folk empire lost to antiquity. Many strange ruins can be found around these regions, some long abandoned, others taken over by new residents. While the Autumn and Midsummer Lands are home to many oddities, the sheer number of ruins and strange prehuman constructions in the Serpent Lands make them stand out as a frontier to be explored.

This is the fourth map of the Serpent Lands, sitting just to the west of Map 3 (and south of the Autumn Lands).

The forests across the north portion of the previous map continue to the northeastern side of this map (along with the continuation of a small wooded mountain range). At the south end of the forest & mountains is another of the strange massive statues that are found throughout the lands, with their hands pointing towards each other.

The majority of this region is hills and rivers – with areas between the sections of hills where swamps and marshes have filled the lowlands. At the southern edge of the northern swamp we have a classic of the genre, a castle that has slowly been taken over by the swamp, the outlying towers having toppled into the mud and vines. A series of wooden walkways traverses the southwestern swamp (I’m thinking of the Black Mire from several of my older campaigns, and expect I’ll continue with these walkways when I continue this swamp). But these walkways lead to a very odd “island” in the swamp – two hexes that sit well above the waterline – the northern one containing a wide ring of small standing stones, and the southern one containing what can only be described as an amusement park amid a stand of giant mushrooms.

As with much of the Serpent Lands, signs of modern civilization are few and far between. One small village sits on the north edge of the map (originally in the Autumn Lands maps) and another pallisaded village sits amid the ruins of a much larger serpent folk metropolis on the western edge of the map. A series of massive monoliths follow the river from the ruined metropolis southwards to the source of the river in question (within the southwestern swamp).

A few other points of interest to seek out on the map (besides the secret cat) include a large dead whale that takes up most of a hex, a large catapult on a hill surrounded by cut-down forest; an old set of mines in the hills that are taken over by giant spiders (a la Minecraft); a fairytale castle; and of course many standing stones of one variety or another.

*The Serpent Lands maps are a set of hexmaps that link up with the Autumn Lands maps from 2025. There have been requests for both an extension on these maps (and the Midsummer Lands before them) and for more commercial-use hex maps like these.*
