The Stepped Vaults of Kar’Zuun

dysonlogosDescription
The Stepped Vaults of Kar’Zuun are clearly a dwarven construction that dates back before the great war, the creation of one of the smaller isolated societies of dwarves that were here before the arrival of the Iron Dwarves in their mighty Earthships. The ancient vaults were once a library or other sort of storage and organizational space for documents and scribes, now long abandoned and taken over by tierjackals.
The Stratim Dwarrow were the descendants of the giants of Law who guard over the Roots of the World. When the giants abandon their charges and move away from the roots, they become smaller and stunted. The Stratim Dwarrow did not so much abandon their charge, but watched the roots they protected be consumed by the death wyrm. These dwarves are still strictly tied by their deep need for law and order and believe that all things rise or fall according to merit, duty, and stone‑bound law. They escaped the consumption of their roots by climbing. Those who could climb survived; those who could not, perished. This calcified into doctrine, and the vaults were constructed in this theme with more important Stratim and more important documents on the higher tiers.
The lower chambers of the Vaults of Kar’Zuun are overrun with the tierjackals – lean, clever scavengers that know the stairwells and ledges of the vaults and use them to their advantage. These stony supernatural beasts look like a hyena variant of a displacer beast, but their tentacles lack any real offensive capability – instead being used to open and close doors within the vaults to surprise intruders. Being partially creatures of elemental stone, the tierjackals only rarely need to feed and thus rarely hunt outside the vaults.
From the secret chambers at the highest level of the vaults, the tierjackals are commanded by the Stair-Sovereign, a mutated Stratim stairwright who has extended their existence beyond death through elemental magics and replacing portions of their failing body with stone. Once a brilliant engineer of the Stairwrights, this Stratim Darrow refused to abandon the vaults even when the texts that were stored here were all destroyed. He has carved everything he can remember from the texts here into the walls and floor of the secret chambers, and when he ran out of room there, he started cutting the most important pieces into his own stone body.
