The Scavengers' Deep - Map 33

dysonlogosDescription
The Scavengers’ Deep is a reminder of the amount of work that went into underground structures during the great war. Generally, the elves only built underground when hiding their breeding and research facilities, whereas the forces of the kingdoms, assisted by the dwarves, were constantly building underground as the elves were unrelenting and would completely raze any surface defences that they defeated.
But the structures now known as the Scavengers’ Deep are atypical, an elven complex mixing some (ruined) surface structures, natural caves, and significant sprawling underground complexes dedicated to research, training, and breeding their slave species.
This is the thirty-third map in the Scavengers’ Deep series – this map sits directly below Map 23 (released nine months ago), and to the right of last month’s Map 32.
This region is mostly given over to the “science” for which the mesa was officially hollowed out. There are two of the cylindrical breeding pits in this area, as well as several other chambers that were used in the cloning, transmutation, testing, and eventual destruction of the various breeds of thralls that were produced during the late days of the Great War. The southern cylindrical chamber has an unusual access door on the bottom level as well as the top, indicating that it was used mostly for thralls in their early stages before they matured into more volatile or violent forms.
*In the early days of my campaign setting, the elves had a variety of unnamed slave vassal races that were only hinted at in my games. I bounced around using goblins and goblinoids for these, or writing up entirely new species. One of their first thralls were humans, who proved to be too elf-like in many respects and ended up released into the worlds of the elven empire and eventually surpassing their old masters. But it was the release of the “Fallen Empires” set for Magic: the Gathering in 1994 that finally made the whole thing concrete. The thralls suddenly had a lot more variety and concrete examples, adopted from the thrulls (in Fallen Empires, the Thrulls wiped out the Ebon Hand who had created them).*
A small section of caves sits below the passage leading to the east from this area. These caves can be accessed here via a long set of stairs leading down to a secret access door. The caves link back the massive network of caves and rivers that cut through the entirety of the mesa and were the original reason that the breeding pits were built here in the first place, using those caves as “evolutionary battlegrounds” for the many thrall species to see which ones surived and which ones could thrive in the hostile environments overcrowded with their kin.
Several other chambers here were obviously used in the production and testing of the thralls, with chambers of incubation tubes and supplies used in the testing processes.
There are three of the ‘nested view’ areas in this map segment. Two are the circular “breeding pits” on the upper left and lower right. The southern one of these has entries at the top and bottom levels. There is also a set of five chambers that sit above the chambers tucked into the “U” in the main hallways through this section.
This map section is heavily interlinked with the maps on all sides of it – with multiple passages off in every direction.
*The 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 14,400 x 14,400 pixels (48 x 48 squares) in size. To use this with a VTT you would need to resize the squares to either 70 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 140 pixels (for the suggested 10′ squares that this is designed around) – so resizing it to either 3,360 x 3,360 or 6,720 x 6720 pixels in size, respectively.*
