The Old Bridge Gate

The Old Bridge Gate is a remnant of the rule of the Hemmon Dynasty – a bridge and gatehouses across this tributary of the Stoneflow which eventually leads to the Black Mire. Along this region, the small river cuts deep into the terrain and runs fifteen feet below. While several fords exist along here, they all require working up and down fairly steep muddy banks.

The bridge is old, older than the road that now barely qualifies as a road. The stones of the bridge are weathered and seem solid except for the one damaged area which seems to be the result of a large explosion and not the effects of time. The flanking gate houses mirror each other like sentinels; one pair broken and slumped into ruin, the other with still intact ground floors and makeshift roofs assembled from the ruins and old lumber.

The Western structures are little more than shattered walls and collapsed roofs. The interiors are choked with rubble and moss-slick stone. The Eastern gatehouses still stand with enough structural integrity to serve as shelter, lookout, and lair. Smoke occasionally curl from a makeshift hearth in the southern one, set up in the south side arrow slit. The bridge itself has an unsettling habit of humming faintly after heavy rain.

Right now the structures serve as the impromptu hold-out for the Broken Banner, a mercenary company that shattered after a particularly disastrous contract. This element of the Broken Banner tried to bully their way through the nearby town, taking whatever resources they could until they ran into organized resistance from the townfolk. Now they are holed up here for the night, waiting for a few seriously injured members of the team (including their captain) recover enough to move on.

But there are things living in the flooded dungeons below, and the Broken Banner is desperate to get out of here as soon as possible.

T*he 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 9,000 x 5,400 pixels (30 x 18 squares). To use this with a VTT you would need to resize the squares to either 100 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 200 pixels (for 10‘ squares) – so resizing the image to 3,000 x 1,800 or 6,000 x 3,600 pixels, respectively.*
